LGBT STUDENT’S LIFE IS HARD
People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) often experience negative attitudes from other.
A report in Ireland says that the most common age that people realise they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is 12 years and the most common age that they first disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity to others (‘come out’) is 17 years.
Some of the key findings from this study on school experiences:
Do LGBT Students feel safe at School?
58% students report the existence of homophobic bullying in their schools.
Over 50% students call abusive names to LGBT students.
34% students report homophobic comments by teachers and other staff members.
25% students physically threaten LGBT students.
40% students verbally threaten LGBT students
Does a LGBT student participate at school?
72% LGBT students feel that they can’t be themselves at school.
20% LGBT Students admit to missing school because they feel threatened
